Galera Cluster now (legally) part of MariaDB

MariaDB

Galera Cluster, the active-active database clustering solution for MySQL, MariaDB and Percona, was often used in combination with MariaDB in the past years. Now this bundle is official, at least legally speaking.

Back in May 2025, MariaDB announced the acquisition of Finnish-based Codership Oy and its flagship product, Galera Cluster.

This strategic move enhances MariaDB’s Enterprise Platform by integrating Galera’s synchronous replication technology, promising improved scalability and zero data loss for enterprise customers. The acquisition also brings the core Galera team, including its founders, into MariaDB, strengthening its European engineering and support capabilities.

Impact of the Acquisition

The acquisition formalizes a long-standing partnership, as Galera Cluster has been integrated with MariaDB Server since 2016. By bringing Galera in-house, MariaDB aims to accelerate innovation in high-availability solutions, addressing the growing demand for zero-downtime, scalable databases in high-volume production environments.

This acquisition will enable us to accelerate our pace of innovation so we can deliver exceptional value to our customers at an even faster rate. – Rohit de Souza, CEO of MariaDB plc

Galera Cluster has been known to work with MySQL and its 2009 fork MariaDB. For now Galera Cluster will continue to work with both products – and is going to be maintained this way.

Galera Cluster works with both MariaDB and MySQL database environments. Both versions will be maintained for the time being and users should experience no change. – MariaDB press release
